Azerbaijan-Indonesia Relations
The
Republic
of
Indonesia recognized the
independence of the
Republic
of
Azerbaijan on December
28, 1991, diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on September 24, 1992.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the
Republic of
Azerbaijan
participated in the 24th Session of the Islamic Conference of
Foreign Ministers on December 9-13, 1996 in
Jakarta. There was a bilateral meeting
between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and the
Republic of
Indonesia on the sidelines of the
Session.

E.Mammadyarov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of

Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of

UN General Assembly.
Azerbaijan
assisted the tsunami victims ofIndonesia
and channeled the
humanitarian assistance of $1 million through the United Nations in December 2004.

Technical Cooperation" were signed during the visit.
Award presentation to the winners of the
competition "Azerbaijan Through the Eyes of Indonesian Students" to commemorate
the 85th birth anniversary
of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the
Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was held on May 16, 2008 in the Trisakti
University. A photo-exhibition dedicated to the National Leader was arranged on
the sidelines of the meeting.

centres of science and education, mass media.
The DVD about National Leader Heydar
Aliyev and the booklets "The Series of "The True Facts about Garabagh""
produced by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation were distributed among the Indonesian
public.
The Embassy produced
a compilation of Reports on the International Legal Responsibilities of Armenia
as the Belligerent Occupier of Azerbaijani Territory, on the Fundamental Norm
of the Territorial Integrity of States and the Right to Self-Determination in
the Light of Armenia’s Revisionist Claims and on the Legal Consequences of the
Armed Aggression by the Republic of Armenia against the Republic of Azerbaijan
circulated by the Azerbaijani side as official documents at the UN General
Assembly and Security Council and distributed it among Indonesian officials,
political and social personalities, regions, centres of science and education,
mass media.
The Embassy produced badges with Azerbaijani
and Indonesian flags and distributed them at joint meetings.
The Embassy has provided renewed
information on Azerbaijan for the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
Indonesia.
The Presidents and Ministers of Foreign
Affairs of Azerbaijan and Indonesia have been exchanging letters on National
holidays and other important occasions.
Azerbaijan
and
Indonesia
have mutually beneficial cooperation at the UN, OIC and other international and
regional organizations. The positions of the two countries are close or overlap
at international forums. Both countries are active participants in the war
against separatism and international terrorism.
Indonesia
has always reiterated its support for the peaceful
resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in accordance
with the generally accepted norms and principles of international law, based on
sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of internationally
recognized borders of States and also for the implementation of the relevant
Resolutions of the UN Security Council and OIC and OSCE decisions. Indonesia
supported on March 14, 2008 the draft resolution "Situation in the occupied
territories of Azerbaijan" proposed by Azerbaijan at the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly, submitted information in favour of
Azerbaijan to the UN for
the Report of the UN Secretary General on the implementation of the mentioned resolution.
Trade turnover between Azerbaijan and
Indonesia in 2008 was $1,416.7 mln.
There are eight Azerbaijanis in
Indonesia, nearly twenty Indonesians are employed by multinational companies in
Azerbaijan.
An Azerbaijani
Corner was launched and a seminar dedicated to "Baku Tragedy" was held on January 20,
2009 at the faculty of Adab and Humanities of the Syarif Hidayatullah State
Islamic University.

Sumatra Province on January 30-February 1, 2009 at the invitation of the governor
of the province to explore opportunities for economic cooperation between
the two countries.

“The Jakarta Post” newspaper published on Jul 14, 2010 an article by Osman Hakan, Turkish citizen refuting baseless claims by Armenia and confirming, based on historic findings, that Nagorno-Karabakh has been and is a part and parcel of Azerbaijan.
Gultakin Mammadzada and Ulviyya Xalilova, the students of the Azerbaijan University og Languages participated in the three months Indonesian Arts and Culture 2010 Programme organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia on July 26 – October 22, 2010. A letter of congratulation with an invitation to visit Indonesia from Ali Marzuki, Chairman of the House of Representative of Indonesia to Oktay Asadov, Chairman of Milli Majlis was sent on December 14, 2010.

Books on conflict in and around Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan published by the Embassy, T-shirts and badges with the appeal “Jusice for Khojaly” and web address of the campaign were distributed among the participants.

Elmar Mammadyarov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan participated in The 16th Ministerial Conference and Commemorative Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on May 24-28, 2011. During the Conference the Minister had a number of bilateral meetings. Azerbaijan became a full member of the Movement in the Conference. Elmar Mammadyarov made 3 presentations and statements in the Conference. In his first statement the Minister expressed his gratitude to all member-countries for supporting Azerbaijan’s full membership, he expressed appreciation to Egypt, Chair of the Movement and Indonesia as a host country. Minister’s following statement covered Azerbaijan’s contemporary development, country’s foreign policy, Armenian-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijan’s support for Palestine’s statehood. Minister in his brief presentation on behalf of European regional group of NAM expressed his gartitude for excellent job and hospitality of the host country.
